Fertility drugs are medicines administered mostly to women so as to influence ovulation. In case of repeated miscarriages or when there are problems with ovulation fertility drugs maybe administered to women. However, this may not be true in all the cases. Sometimes when the woman does not have ovulation issues but the man is undergoing IVF treatment, fertility drugs are administered to the woman to increase the number of eggs produced. This is done in order to retrieve eggs for a successful IVF treatment.

There are various fertility drugs being used. Clomid is one such medicine. It is in fact the first medication tried while treating ovulatory dysfunction. It has the minimum side effects as compared to other fertility drugs. Femera is another medicine administered to increase pregnancy rates. It is not really a fertility drug. Femera is mostly used in postmenstrual women to treat breast cancer. It is not considered injurious to the baby during pregnancy because it is taken before the baby is conceived and not while the baby is in the womb. Follistims or Gonal-Fs are fertility drugs that imitate the functioning of the FSH hormone in the body.

Recombinant DNA technology is used in order to create these. FSH is the hormone which tells the oocytes in the ovaries to mature and grow. Bravelle and Fertinex are the same as Follistims or Gonal-Fs except that instead of producing them from recombinant DNA technology, they are extracted and purified from the urine of post menstrual women. These fertility drugs are less effective but cheaper as compared to their artificially made counter parts. Ovidrel and Novarel are medicines which mimic the hormone LH.

The hormone LH in the body which triggers ovulation is extracted from the urine of women who are pregnant. These fertility drugs are often injected during or after FSH and IVF treatment. Antagon and Cetrodite are other examples of medicines used to improve fertility. They are different from all the other fertility drugs mentioned above in the sense that instead of helping in ovulation, they suppress it to as to avoid the loss of eggs during IVF treatment. They are also used to prevent the risk of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome in case estrogen levels are very high.

There are various risks involved with fertility drugs as is the case with any other medicine. The most prominent risk is that of multiple pregnancies. Twins, triplets or even higher order can occur if fertility drugs are used.
